Watch the camera preview, not the screen. Stop as soon as the shadows lift — past that you flatten your features and catch reflections in glasses.
A useful screen tool, with limits
A display is soft and convenient, but its output is modest and its colour is uncalibrated. For a shoot where colour accuracy matters, or a room bright enough to overpower a monitor, use a purpose-built light.
A practical video-call lighting guide
Two properties make a light source flattering: size relative to the subject, and distance. A large source close to a face produces soft-edged shadows that wrap gently around the nose and jaw. A small distant source produces hard shadows and harsh edges. This is why photographers spend money on big diffusers and softboxes — and why a bare ring light, small and pointed straight on, often looks worse than people expect.
A 27-inch monitor sitting half a metre from your face is, by those measures, an excellent source. It is enormous relative to your head and it is close, so the light it throws is genuinely soft. What it lacks is output: a display puts out a small fraction of what a dedicated video light does, which is why this works beautifully in an ordinary room and poorly against a sunlit window. Within that limit, a screen is not a compromise — it is a large soft source you already own.
Open Zoom Lighting on whichever display is nearest your webcam, then move it slightly to one side and a little above eye level, angled down at your face. That offset is deliberate. Light dead-on from the front erases the shadows that give a face shape and depth, producing the flat, washed look of a photocopier. A light from thirty or forty degrees to one side keeps a soft shadow on the far cheek, and that shadow is what reads as three-dimensional on camera.
Two placements to avoid. Below the camera pointing up is the classic horror-film angle, and our eyes register it as wrong long before we can explain why. Behind you, the screen lights your background and leaves your face in relative darkness, which is the same problem as sitting with a window at your back. Once positioned, check your framing — unless you want a visible coloured glow in shot, the screen itself should stay outside the frame.
Colour temperature in Kelvin describes where a light sits on the amber-to-blue axis. Low numbers are warm: 1900K is candlelight, 2700K is a warm household bulb, 3200K is soft white indoor lighting. The middle, around 4200K, is neutral. Higher numbers are cool: 5600K is midday daylight, 7000K is overcast sky, 9500K is deep blue shade.
The number that matters is not the "best" one but the one that matches everything else lighting you. Webcams set white balance automatically from the dominant light in the scene. Give a camera two sources at different temperatures and it can only neutralise one — the other shifts visibly, which is why half a face can end up warm and the other half blue. Pick the preset closest to your room, then fine-tune with the slider while watching skin tones and any white object in frame. When both look neutral, you have matched it.
If your room has genuinely mixed light — a warm lamp on one side, a window on the other — the honest fix is to remove one source rather than split the difference. Close the curtain or switch off the lamp, then light with the screen.
Set the temperature first, then bring the brightness up from the soft end while watching your camera preview. Stop as soon as the shadows under your eyes and chin have lifted. It is tempting to keep going, but past that point three things go wrong: facial detail flattens out, glasses start catching a bright rectangle, and the camera's auto-exposure compensates by darkening everything else, so your background falls into gloom.
How much you need depends on the screen. A large bright monitor at 40% may do more than a phone at 100%. Older laptop panels need to be closer. And if your eyes feel tired, that is information: turn it down, keep some ambient light in the room, and never stare into the bright area. Comfort over a one-hour meeting matters more than a marginally better image.
Zoom Lighting is independent of your meeting software. It produces light on a display and never touches the camera feed, so there is nothing to install, no permission to grant, and no compatibility list — it works the same for Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Skype, Discord, OBS, and any browser recorder.
Open your video app first so you can judge the actual result rather than guessing. Frame yourself with your eyes roughly a third of the way down the picture, deal with anything distracting behind you, then adjust the light. In Zoom specifically, turn off "Adjust for low light" while you set up — it fights your changes by brightening the image automatically, which makes it impossible to tell what the light is actually doing. Turn it back on afterwards if you still want it.
Also close the bright window behind you or draw the curtain. A strong backlight is the single most common reason people appear as silhouettes on calls, and no amount of screen light will out-argue direct sunlight.
Set the temperature and brightness first, then press Open fullscreen: the browser interface disappears and the entire panel becomes the light, which is both brighter and cleaner than a page with toolbars glowing at different colours. Tick hide-cursor so a stray pointer is not sitting as a dark speck in your key light. To change anything, press Escape, adjust, and go back in.
Desktop browsers handle this straightforwardly. Some mobile browsers present fullscreen differently or keep parts of their interface visible; the tool still fills the screen with the colour either way, so a tablet remains perfectly usable as a light.
