A practical colour guide
Of all the colours a screen can produce, orange is the one that most resembles natural light people already find appealing. Firelight, candles, tungsten bulbs, and low sun all sit in the warm amber region, and our eyes read that range as comfortable and inviting rather than artificial. That gives an orange screen a practical advantage over more exotic colours: light from it tends to look motivated rather than obviously coloured.
This colour, #F97316, is red-dominant with green at roughly 45% and almost no blue. That mix puts it close to the warm end of the Kelvin scale in perceived temperature, and it is why a dimmed orange panel next to someone’s face reads as a warm lamp just out of shot rather than as a monitor.
Photographers plan whole shoots around the hour after sunrise and before sunset because low sun is warm, soft, and directional. You cannot reproduce the direction or the scale of that with a monitor, but you can reproduce the colour, and for close-range work the colour is doing much of the work.
Set the screen slightly to one side of your subject and low, angled up a little, to imitate the angle of a setting sun. Start the brightness low — warm light is convincing when it is subtle and obviously artificial when it is blasting. Then check the result through the camera rather than by eye: sensors handle strong red-dominant light differently, and auto white balance will often try to neutralise the effect you are creating. Locking white balance manually keeps the warmth in the shot.
In film language, a practical is a light source that exists inside the story — a lamp, a fire, a television. Orange is the most useful screen colour for faking one. Just out of frame it can suggest a fireplace, a sunset through a window, or a street light, giving a shot a reason for its warm edge that the audience accepts without thinking about it.
The effect works best as a rim or edge light rather than a frontal one. Place the screen behind and to the side of your subject so the warmth catches a shoulder, a cheekbone, or the edge of an object, while your main light stays neutral. That contrast between a neutral key and a warm rim is what makes the shot look lit rather than tinted.
Orange and blue sit opposite each other on the colour wheel, which is why the pairing dominates film posters and why anything cool-toned photographs so well against an orange field. Silver, grey, teal, denim, and pale blue objects all gain immediate separation. Warm subjects — wood, skin, brass, anything orange or red — do the opposite and sink into the background, so avoid it for those.
For a plain backdrop, keep the brightness high and the subject far enough forward that the orange is not spilling onto it, unless you want that warmth as part of the look. If you need the subject cleanly separated for later cutting out, the green screen is the right tool instead.

Reasonably well at close range. Late sun sits around 2000K–3000K, which is the warm amber region this colour occupies. It will not match the intensity or the long shadows of real low sun, but for a face, a hand, or a small object it is a convincing warm key.
Because it uses less of the green subpixel. Yellow drives red and green at full power; orange runs green at under half. Less total subpixel output means less light, so orange always reads as deeper and dimmer than yellow on the same panel.
