How it works
A practical colour guide
Walk through any collection of streaming, gaming, or desk-setup photographs and the same colour keeps appearing. Purple has become shorthand for a certain kind of contemporary technical space, partly through Twitch branding and partly because it is what most RGB lighting strips default to when someone wants something that is not plainly red, green, or blue.
The practical consequence is that a spare monitor showing fullscreen purple does most of what an LED strip does, for free and instantly. Put it behind you, out of the camera’s direct view, and it fills the background with exactly the colour the aesthetic expects — without ordering hardware, running cables, or configuring an app.
Perceived brightness in a display comes mostly from the green subpixel — it contributes roughly 70% of luminance, with red around 20% and blue barely 7%. Purple is built from red and blue with green almost entirely off, which means it is running on the two weakest channels. That makes it one of the darkest saturated colours a panel can show.
For lighting a subject, that is a real limitation: there simply is not much light coming out. For atmosphere, it is the point. A colour that fills a background with mood without blowing out the exposure or throwing a strong cast onto everything nearby is exactly what you want behind a shot. Purple is dim in a way that works in your favour.
Aim a dimmed purple screen at a wall a metre or two away and it produces a soft violet wash that reads as evening and calm. Behind a monitor it works as a bias light with more character than plain white. In a photograph, purple in the background separates the subject from the wall and adds depth that a flat neutral cannot.
Keep it out of the direct path to your subject’s face. Purple light on skin looks unhealthy — it emphasises blue and violet tones that human faces do not naturally have, which reads as illness or cold rather than atmosphere. Because purple leaves the green subpixel nearly off, it is a good field for finding green faults: a subpixel stuck fully on green appears as an unmistakable bright dot against the deep violet. It also shows banding readily — purple gradients are notoriously hard for 6-bit and dithered panels to render smoothly, and a solid field makes the panel’s handling of the red-blue mix easy to judge.
Run it as part of a set rather than alone. Yellow catches blue faults, blue catches red and green ones, and black and white between them catch the rest. A mark that survives every colour is almost certainly dust on the glass.
